People of the Lightning A Novel of North America Forgotten Past eBook Kathleen O'Neal Gear W Michael Gear

I read the first dozen or so books in this series in high school. Loved them, but when college began I had less time for leisurely reading. I recently picked the series up again by coming across my copy of "People of the Wolf" and dove back into the wonderful world the Gears wove. I am currently three quarters of the way through "People of the Lightning" and I ran across a mistake about Seedpod that makes me wonder who proofread this (not to mention the handful of grammatical mistakes sprinkled throughout the novel). The first two thirds of the novel Seedpod is father to Musselwhite and grandfather to Diamondback and Thorny Boy, but when the Heartwood war party meets up with the survivors of the Windy Cove Clan at Manatee Lagoon Seedpod has become father to Musselwhite and Diamondback and grandfather to Thorny Boy. It bothered me enough to stop reading after the second reference to him being the father and not the grandfather to come on here and vent. Still love the series and I hope to catch up to the most recent novel in the series soon.

People of the Lightning A Novel of North America Forgotten Past eBook Kathleen O'Neal Gear W Michael Gear Reviews

This is historical fiction about ancient southern Florida. It is brilliantly written. I love how the authors bring the characters to life. There is a fifteen year old boy who is born to full fill a legend...no spoilers.
Great. Loved everything about it.
I absolutely LOVE this series! must be read in order, even though the books are not set chronologically. I can't put these books down for long, and as soon as I've finished one, I immediately purchase the next one! Never boring, always exciting and different to each other, but intrinsically linked to each of the other books in the series!
If you enjoy reading about the history of the United States, don't think it all started with the landing of the Pilgrims. Yeah, our schools teach history from about 1620, but dedicated archaeologists and antropologists' research is beginning to give us a taste of history preceding that time. This Gear book is set in ancient Florida. Using recent research as a background W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear have woven a tale of a special young man living at that time. I recommend it.
Since I really enjoy all the novels written by the Gears, I would say that this one seemed a bit strange in the beginning and it took me some time to get into it but then the pace picked up and I couldn't put it down. There was the romance, the intrigue, the twists and turns and the supernatural along with the historical that kept me reading to the end.
I have the book 5 stars because I thought it was very good, interesting and mysterious. I have an engineering background and have a hard time understanding the authors use of 'hand of length ' and 'hand of time'. I also found it interesting how the authors used an albino human being in the story.
I like the First Americans series despite my reservations about the fantasy element. I don't believe that ancient peoples were somehow in touch with a more spiritual aspect of the Universe so I find the ability of some of the characters to "see" what's going on, or even more unbelievably, predict what's going to happen via some mystical forces as total baloney. Of the series I think this was one of the best I've read so far (despite my reservations).
It's Ancient Florida and the tribes are being harassed by a powerful, mystic warrior, Cottonmouth, who has predicted the end of the world. He is linked through a tempestuous, failed marriage to a great female warrior, Musselwhite, whose tribe has been badly mauled by Cottonmouth's warriors. In order to gain allies Musselwhite ends up marrying an albino Lightning Boy, Pondwader, who is unaware of the powers that he could unleash.
I know it all sounds a bit too fantastical but in fact there is quite a gripping and down-to-earth storyline which builds the characters well and comes to a thrilling finale. My only problem is - why do I keep reading Pondwader as Pondwater?
