I read this book too many times to count in the second grade, & I'm now buying it for my daughters (that's my story and I'm sticking to it). For anyone who has ever wondered about the neighbors or what it would be like to have a large family, a lot of money, but not both at the same time, or for anyone who remembers or wants to know what children did when toys were powered only by imagination, this is the book you want. Ms. Godden had the dynamics of young girls' relationships, coping skills, & personality differences nailed decades before anyone thought of queen bees or wanna be's. I read a great many books growing up, but none rang so true or was so much fun as this story. A classic.

I'm often not a fan of sequels, but this follow-up to "Miss Happiness and Miss Flower" is pretty good, although not quite as well-developed a story as its predecessor. Belinda and Nona and their Japanese doll family, consisting of the Misses Happiness and Flower and baby Little Peach, are back for more Japanese-inspired adventures. Interestingly, Belinda, who scoffed at the whole idea of a Japanese house in the first book, has really gotten on board with the idea. She's now hellbent on teaching the new little girl next door how to properly take care of her own Japanese doll, Little Plum, who just sits alone in the window all day.

Despite her new interest in Japanese culture, Belinda is still outspoken Belinda, and she enthusiastically goes about "helping" poor neglected Little Plum rather like a bull in a china shop. Predictably, the little girl next door (who also happens to be rich and lonely) doesn't appreciate Belinda's efforts. Belinda keeps leaving notes and Japanese presents for Little Plum and her owner promptly throws each one out of the window. This is not meant to be that humorous, and certainly isn't funny to the frustrated Belinda, but the repetition of item after item sailing out the window does make you chuckle after a while - with each new attempt Belinda makes, you can just see how it is going to end up. Eventually, Belinda resorts to drastic measures in order to rescue Little Plum. Will all the dolls and their owners ever be able to work out their differences? Happily, the answer is "yes" but you'll have to read the book to see exactly how this happens.

The story of "Little Plum" is simpler than the story of "Miss Happiness and Miss Flower", and therefore not quite as interesting to read, hence the four stars instead of five. Also, while "Little Plum" does contain some descriptions of how Japanese dolls house props can be made (I particularly remember the idea of cutting up white thread to make a bowl of dollie rice), these items were also described for the most part in the preceding book. Although you don't have to read "Miss Happiness and Miss Flower" to enjoy this book, you'll probably understand the story and the characters better if you read both books in order.
Written in lovely language and has a good plot storyline for cross-cultural understandings, suitable for reading aloud to 5-year olds, or for 9 year olds to read for themselves.
I adored this book as a kid, and ordered it just for nostalgia. I reread it while waiting at the doctor's office, and it is just as good of a children's book as I remembered.
too ad-to my collection. Ok condition, again the seller stated this, so no surprise here. Was hard to find at a low price and they had it. Came on time. Lovely story for little girls who are into dolls and doll houses. Getting the follow up book.
I loved it as a kid, and loved it all over again. If you have a doll-loving, rough and tumble girl in your life, this (along with The Story of Holly and Ivy) is a perfect gift.
