This book was recommended reading for an Earth Watch Volunteer Program I had signed up for working with Leatherback Sea Turtles in Costa Rica. Absolutely fascinating read. I learned so much about not just the Leatherback Sea Turtles but all species of Sea Turtles. This book is exceptionally well written and is easy to understand and comprehend. I was excited to learn about my home state of South Carolina's important role in saving these magnificent sea creatures. You will not want to put this book down. It has lots of important information and will hopefully encourage those that read this book to not only play a more active role in saving our marine life but also give them the tools and information that they will need to help educate others on the importance of these animals to our world.Product details

Great resource and very interesting book!
I found the book totally engrossing to read. It gave me details that I had never thought of before. very interesting to read and also very enjoyable
Great information about Leatherback turtles and raises many good conservation issues challenging not only leatherbacks but also loggerheads, greens, and hawksbills..
So grateful for this book which helped me in my thinking (and future action!) about environmental issues.
Toward the end of his absorbing and beautifully written exploration, the author comes to this conclusion about the fate of the endangered turtles You dodge despair by not taking the deluge of problems full-bore. You focus on what can work, what can help, or what you can do, and you seize it, and then - you don't let go.
He also champions LOCAL solutions. Bless you, Carl Safina!
A compelling story full of facts, first hand accounts, science, and, politics. An addictive read that not only explains the complicated story behind the saving of this species, but does so in such a completely honest and fair manner. One can understand how we all- environmentalists, fishermen, government politicians, and the general public- are fighting for the same thing, conservation of our planets endangered resources. Rare to find a book which tells the whole story, from every angle, without bias for anything besides the endangered creature itself. Even rarer to find one written in such a easy to read and addictive flow. Hard to put down and a recommended read for anyone interested in our oceans.
The author offers his insight into the problems faced by these amazing creatures. Most of which are caused by human encroachment. He also brings to light what is being done to help restore their numbers. He offers hope for the future. It is a must read.
Go for the hard copy, even if used. The paperback printing is not very good and the photos are quite poor, compared to the hardbound - I have both. I bought the paperback for the plane and loved it. But, when I saw the quality of the hardbound at the library, I bought that version too ...it was "used" but effectively new and CHEAPER. Believe me, the photos are no comparison and the print is much better, not blurred.
